Vaccination Against Shingles
In addition to the regular flu shot clinics which have been offered in our district for many years, we are in a position to again provide partial reimbursement for costs associated with the shingles vaccine.
The following parameters and processes apply to be eligible for reimbursement for the shingles vaccine:
- As the vaccine is recommended for individuals aged 50 and older, only employees aged 50 and over are eligible for reimbursement;
a. Regular and temporary employees currently working in an assignment/position;
b. TTOCs and substitutes who have worked at least 15 days in the school year
- Employees opting for the shingles vaccine must complete both doses of the vaccine to be eligible for reimbursement (the vaccine is given as 2 doses, at least 2 to 6 months apart).
The first dose must be accessed through an SD 38 vaccination clinic; the second dose can be accessed through either an SD 38 vaccination clinic or a community health care provider (often a pharmacy or travel clinic).
- Employees are responsible for paying for full $165 cost of Dose 1 of the vaccine at the time it is administered at an SD 38 vaccination clinic.
- The District will pay the full $165 cost of Dose 2 of the vaccine at the time it is administered at an SD 38 vaccination clinic.
- Eligible employees who choose to access Dose 2 at a clinic other than an SD 38 vaccination clinic must submit requests for reimbursement, to a maximum of $165. PLEASE NOTE: only Dose 2 may be accessed at a non-SD 38 clinic. Dose 1 MUST BE ACCESSED through an SD 38 vaccination clinic.
- If you would like to access the shingles vaccine but an upfront cost of $165 is prohibitive for you at this time, you may share this information, in confidence, with Munique Sidhu, HR Assistant, at msidhu@sd38.bc.ca. We will work to address those situations on a case by case basis to create access for as many employees as possible.
Please refer to the Immunize BC website for additional information about the shingles vaccine:

Medication Renewal Navigator: 50$
Given the shortages of family doctors we’re faced with in BC, we often have challenges getting simple prescription renewals. Our team of healthcare professionals, which includes pharmacists and physicians, can help staff assess their medication refill needs and act as a concierge to identify the simplest and most effective way to get their medications. Our consults are completed virtually and helps decrease the need to take time off work needed to go to a walk in clinic or doctor’s appointment.
- RSD38 staff completes a booking form
- Our clinical pharmacist will reach out via phone/email to assess and provide either a medication renewal service or referral
- Medication Renewal is done by the pharmacist for up to 2 years and the medication is delivered through partner pharmacy locations
- Pharmacist to refer to Telemedicine partner service if not eligible for pharmacist renewal
- All appropriate information will be provided by the pharmacist to the telehealth physician for a next day appointment.
- Following the tele-health renewal the patient will receive the medication delivered from a partner pharmacy.
Travel Assessment: 40$
International travel has returned, and many RSD employees will be taking trips to exotic destinations. Immunize.io in partnership with TravelRX would like to offer RSD38 employees virtual or in-person travel health consultations. Richmond school district students and staff chaperones taking school sponsored trips abroad can also benefit from this travel health service.
In a travel health consultation a certified travel health provider meets with the individual travelling abroad. This is a 30 minute (virtual or in-person) appointment where the traveler’s health history, previous vaccination history, and travel itinerary is reviewed. The provider then provides travel health advice and discusses the recommended/required vaccines for travel. The traveller can then elect to have the vaccines administered during an in-person visit, or arrange for an appointment to have them administered. Administration of travel vaccinations following a virtual appointment can also occur during already scheduled onsite staff immunization clinics for additional convenience. Does not include the cost of the vaccines.
